# Restore a website, database or mailbox from a backup

Every website on Web7 is backed up automatically, every day, and each backup is kept for 30 days. You can restore a whole site, single files, a database or a mailbox yourself, in a few clicks, at any time of day.

## How Web7 backups work

- **Daily and automatic.** There's nothing to schedule or switch on.
- **Kept for 30 days.** You can go back to any day in the last month.
- **Stored offsite.** Backups live in a separate location from our Albuquerque data center, so a problem at one site can't take out both.
- **Restore yes, delete no.** You can browse and restore any backup, but nobody on your account can delete one, not even a malicious script. If a site is infected, the backups you need to recover are still there.

## What can I restore?

| Restore | Use it when |
| --- | --- |
| **Whole website** | An update broke the site, or the site was hacked. |
| **Files and folders** | You deleted a file, or a theme edit went wrong. |
| **Database** | Content or settings changed and you want them back as they were. |
| **Email** | Messages or a mailbox were deleted by mistake. |

## 1. Pick the right restore point

Work out when the problem started, then choose the most recent backup from **before** that time. If you're not sure, start with the newest backup that predates the change and work backwards.

## 2. Open the site's backups

In Enhance, open **Websites**, select the site and go to its backups. You'll see a list of restore points with the date each was taken.

## 3. Choose what to restore

Pick the restore point, then choose whether to restore everything or only part of it: files, the database or email. Restore the smallest thing that fixes the problem. If only one file is wrong, there's no need to roll back the whole site.

> **Read this before a full restore.** Restoring the database or the whole site replaces what's there now. Anything added since that backup, such as new orders, form entries, comments or posts, will be lost. For WooCommerce stores, export recent orders first, or [ask us](https://my.web7tech.com/submitticket.php) to help you restore without losing them.

## 4. Confirm and check the site

Start the restore and wait for it to finish. Larger sites take a few minutes. Then:

1. Load the site in a private browser window.
2. Clear any caches: your caching plugin, and Cloudflare if you use it (**Caching → Configuration → Purge Everything**).
3. Log in to WordPress and check the pages that were broken.

## Recovering from a hacked site

Restoring a clean backup removes the infection, but not the hole it came in through. After restoring:

- Change every WordPress admin password, plus your control panel and database passwords.
- Update WordPress, plus every plugin and theme, and delete anything you don't use.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for all admin accounts.

Our team can help you find how the attacker got in. [Open a support ticket](https://my.web7tech.com/submitticket.php) and tell us roughly when the problem started.

## Can't find the backup you need?

Backups older than 30 days are no longer kept. If you need something from further back, or a restore isn't behaving as expected, [contact support](https://my.web7tech.com/submitticket.php) and we'll take a look.
